How will an Everyday Self Defense workshop help me?

The key to finding security in daily life is increasing awareness. Awareness has many facets and Everyday Self Defense offers more than the commonly recommended safety tips (locking doors, checking the back seat of cars...). A workshop offers a chance to multiply awareness skills in a variety of areas and develop an integrated approach to threatening situations at home, at work, or on the street. Isn't your safety worth a few hours of your time? This program offers a unique opportunity to discover untapped abilities that you can use to improve personal safety and well being.

Why do I need to know Everyday Self Defense?

We all take action to help ourselves feel safe. Some people buy guns, some people get a dog and some rely on others for protection. The goal of personal safety and wellness training is to develop the tools to protect yourself with body, mind and spirit in all kinds of everyday situations. The more we learn, the more we can carry these tools with us to increase the value and quality of our personal and professional lives. Confidence, self-worth, assertiveness, and self-reliance are the results.

How is Everyday Self Defense different from other personal safety programs?

Everyday Self Defense is the result of the Janet Nelson's unique experience and training as a social worker and a martial artist. She has realized that for many of us personal safety training should be targeted at everyday threats to personal safety and well being — not the extremely rare event that most of us fear - the violent stranger attack.

Janet has spent years developing a unique combination of skills focused directly on our everyday self-defense needs. Unlike most "canned" programs, each workshop is tailored to the needs of your organization. She has ideas and advice to help you maintain your chosen and necessary activities - not warnings that limit your mobility and restrict your freedom.

In Everyday Self Defense, you will hear "If you have to work alone at night, you should…" instead of "Don't ever work alone at night."

What will I learn in an Everyday Self Defense program?

After experiencing Everyday Self Defense, you will begin to gain the skills that will allow you to protect yourself at home, at work, or on the street. You will become more aware of your body and how to use your whole body to protect yourself. You will learn and practice physical assertiveness, with up to a dozen remarkably simple but effective exercises. You will imagine and mentally practice what if scenarios — and your best actions in such situations. Participants can improve their ability to:

  • Use their mental capabilities to defend themselves
  • Use physical capabilities in simple, safe, yet powerful ways
  • Identify the everyday situations that may compromise wellness and safety
  • Recognize stereotypes and how they influence our safety decisions
  • Identify assertiveness skills and practice using them
